4 Key Ways to Achieve Innovation

automationAccording to Webster, the definition of innovation is “the act or process of introducing new ideas, devices, or methods.” This word is being paired with manufacturing a lot these days, because the industry is doing just that—collectively coming up with solutions, technologies, and products that are driving change and making things better.

But it’s not just a collective process in manufacturing; it also happens on a smaller scale, within individual companies. But how do you achieve it? How does one individual company, or an individual member of a business, drive and promote innovation? Here are some ways:

  1. Concrete Creativity
Think outside the box, and then use the power of the whole company to make the creative idea work. Collaborate on creative ideas, be clear in your intent, but also listen to others—then make things happen.
  2. Reduce Risks
Come up with an idea, then figure out how to reduce the risks to the business, its customers, and its stakeholders. Perhaps form a team and give small projects to each one, getting everyone involved and keeping it from feeling too overwhelming.
  3. Change Environments
It’s often very useful to leave the office and interact with customers, colleagues, peers, industry leaders, and even competitors. When you get out there and meet your customers, you can see and understand what they like, what they don’t, and what they’re really looking for. And by meeting competitors, you can see what they’re doing right and wrong.
  4. Be Determined
Innovation can also be looked at as a form of change, and change is both difficult and frightening. In order to make it happen, you’ll need true determination, which also means you’ll have to expect a few things: expect to hear the word “no,” expect to fail and try again, and expect to face financial challenges. Just be determined to make or do what you set out to, and not let these challenges stop you.
